10-Lavazza

 

Description: this violin is a fine old Italian instrument, the work of Santino Lavazza of Milan. It dates from the first quarter of the 18th century. It is a good and characteristic example of the maker’s work.

Measurements: 35.5cm in length of body, with widths of 16.4cm and 20.2cm.

Violin maker: Lavazza, Santino. Born 1689, died 1726 Milan Italy. Son of Pietro Antonio Lavazza, above. Fine work of the Grancino school, showing some influence of Landolphi. More disciplined than contemporary work by the Testore family. Scroll very much in the Grancino style. Flat arching but very full to the edge, with broad purfling, Substantial golden-brown varnish.
